Profile

The alpaca stud which today is known as Rivermist was established in the 1990’s. We arrived here in 2003 after seeing the ‘for sale’ advertisement for the farm. We hadn’t set out to buy an alpaca farm, but as soon as we drove down the driveway we were ‘home’.

We started with one stud and ten females, and now have over forty alpaca. We know them all by name and character (and they are all so different!) and we could not imagine our lives without them.

The first male is Banksia Park Balmoral, born in 2000 and was Senior Male Reserve Champion at the Perth Royal Show in 2001. We have two other boys from different blood lines who will start their working life in 2007.

Although the farm has been breeding mainly brown and fawn alpaca, we have decided to move the emphasis of the stud towards breeding greys. Given that the gestation period is long this will be a slow process, and you can never guarantee the colour of the cria that will be born.

Nearby to Rivermist is the historic Katrine Causeway, started in 1853 by convict labour, which you can view from Viveash Picnic area on the corner of Northam-Toodyay Road and Katrine Road. Travel along Katrine Road and you will see other sites of historic interest including St Saviours church, Katrine Barn (now a B&B) and the ruins of early settlements.

Also on Northam-Toodyay Road is the Lavender Estate, growing and selling lavender and lavender products, and Place of Plenty selling their own olive oil.
